What actually happens

Decide honestly
Replacement is the right call when the system is undersized, when corrosion or dents are widespread, or when the cost of repeated repairs has overtaken the cost of doing it once. It is the wrong call when two joints have failed on an otherwise sound run.

Remove and inspect
Tear-off is the only moment the fascia behind the gutter is visible. Soft or rotten board found here has to be dealt with before anything new is hung — see fascia and soffit.

Re-specify rather than replicate
Replacing like for like repeats the original mistake if the original was undersized. Roof area, valley concentration and downspout placement are worth reconsidering rather than copying.

Install and clean up
Old material is removed from site. The finished run is checked for slope and for discharge away from the foundation.
