What actually happens

Size the outlets to the roof, not to habit
Five-inch gutters with 2×3 downspouts are Mountain Top’s primary system and the size used on most of its gutter jobs. A 3×4 downspout provides additional outlet capacity when the roof design, drainage path or concentrated runoff calls for it.

Place them where the water actually concentrates
Roof valleys concentrate flow. Downspout placement should follow the roof geometry rather than whatever is most convenient on the elevation.

Get the water away from the building
A downspout that discharges at the wall has moved the problem down rather than away. Extensions, splash blocks and grade all matter, and are cheap compared with foundation or stucco repair.

Deal with canales and scuppers properly
Flat and low-slope roofs across the Southwest drain through canales or scuppers that throw water clear of the parapet — straight down the wall. Fitting a collector and a downspout turns an uncontrolled discharge into a managed one, without changing the roof.

Around here specifically
What the desert does differently
This is the most regionally distinctive part of the trade and the least written about. Canales and scuppers are a genuine Southwest architectural feature, and homes with them frequently have no controlled drainage at all — the water simply leaves the roof and runs down the wall. Add caliche soils that shed rather than absorb, and short intense storms, and the drainage side of the system matters at least as much as the gutter.
